    I was mesmerized by this novel. The setting is so rich and the story so sharp. I'm not sure I can forgive the narrator, but I can definitely identify with her. Everyone has something to be ashamed of, don't they? Also, compared to foot-binding, high heels seem pretty inconsequential....

    I woke up one morning last week to hear Nancy Pearl on NPR say that she's been rereading this book every two years since it was first published in 1980. That's a recommendation I'm willing to take, and I'm loving this town and (almost) all of its inhabitants. Malone's narrator is removed but very tender, and all of these folks seem very, very real.

There are several storylines going all at once which keeps it interesting, and while some of the details are gruesome, it's never a scary book.

Thursday is my favorite day

It's knitting night, at my house this week, and Roberta's driving up from Gig Harbor for a belated birthday celebration. I was planning to buy one of those dense chocolate bundt cakes and a little glass bottle of cream because Roberta turned us all onto pouring cream all over our cake a few years ago after she got back from a year in the UK. I am an absolute hedonist when it comes to dessert, and even I think it's decadent to pour cream over cake, but hey, it tastes really good. But then I stumbled across this Lemon Crostata recipe on epicurious yesterday, and just the thought of it made me lose all interest in chocolate cake and cream. Roberta says she likes lemon anything. Me too. I hope I don't eat it all before she even gets here.

Now, does it need ice cream, do you think?
